O'Chiese First Nation School

Location: O'Chiese, Alberta
Owner: O'Chiese First Nations
Architect: Architecture 49
Contract Type: Stipulated Sum
Completion Date: August 2016
Project Value: $24.3M

The O’Chiese First Nation School project is located 50 kilometers northwest of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. The 50,000 square foot school is constructed in a new development on the O’Chiese First Nation Reserve along with a new water treatment plant to service the school and the development. The school is composed of two wood framed classroom wings on the east and west sides and a steel framed core that contains the library, cafeteria, gymnasium and administrative spaces. The core of the school is almost entirely covered by glue-laminated wood decking which is exposed to the spaces below.
The entire main floor has in-floor radiant heating and most of the rooms have electrical outlets within the concrete structural slabs. This caused getting the foundations completed to be a major aspect of the project, as a lot of trade coordination was required before the slabs could be poured.
