Eenchokay Birchstick School

Location: Pikangikum, Ontario
Owner: Pikangikum First Nation
Architect: Number TEN Architecture
Contract Type: Design-Build
Completion Date: September 2016
Project Value: $58.7M

The Pikangikum School was an exciting and challenging project for both Penn-Co Construction and Pikangikum First Nation. Pikangikum First Nation is located in Northwestern Ontario, north of Red Lake, and is accessible by air, barge or ice road depending on the season. This 105,000 square foot Kindergarten-Grade 12 School will greatly benefit the community and allow all students to attend school under one roof, in lieu of the multiple portable classrooms currently used as well as offer a gathering point for community events. This project is a Design-Build project, which brings another level of complexity to the table. In order to meet project timelines, Penn-Co was required to begin construction months before 100% Construction Drawings were finalized. Another aspect of this project that increased complexity was the lack of granular/fill in the community. This along with the number of loads required to bring all of the building materials to site, resulted in this being one of, if not the, largest winter/ice road projects in AANDC history excluding Territorial Projects. This project also requires the construction of a Diesel Generating Station & upgrades to the First Nations Civil Services & Roadways. The new school includes two full size gymnasiums, dozens of classrooms, two cafeterias, a full commercial kitchen and vocational training classrooms among other educational spaces.
