This school project in Attawapiskat in northern Ontario was unique. The entire 60,000 square foot school was built on four feet of light weight fill (Styrofoam) that is buried under another three feet of granular fill. The school has a concrete slab on grade with structural steel framework. The majority of the school is a single floor but there is a second floor over the central portion of the school. Another feature to the school is a pre-engineered building being used as the gymnasium that is tied back to the rest of the school with a large open concept hallway.
This project was also unique in regards to shipping materials and sending labour forces to the job site. Materials were shipped via truck to Cochrane, Ontario where they were loaded onto a train to Moosonee. From Moosonee, they were loaded onto a barge during the summer months and shipped to Attawapiskat through James Bay. During the winter months, the materials were reloaded onto trucks and delivered to site on winter roads, making for very difficult logistics.
