Location: Whitedog, Ontario
Owner: Wabaseemoong Independent Nation
Architect: Smith Carter
Contract Type: Stipulated Sum
Completion Date: December 2011
Project Value: $21.6M

The 48,000 square foot Mizhakiiwetung Memorial School consists of a central hub, which wraps around a circular courtyard with two curving classroom wings, a library and a gymnasium branching off from it. The kindergarten to grade 12 school, serves three Ojibway communities making up Wabaseemoong Independent Nations - White Dog, One Man Lake, and Swan Lake. The site landscaping includes a baseball diamond, a running track around a soccer pitch and a skating rink. It also includes several play structures for the kindergarten and elementary classes. The building’s foundation is driven precast concrete piles, cast-in-place concrete grade beams and structural slabs. The structure consists of structural steel framing supporting large glulam beams with Douglas fir wood decking for a natural appearance. The interior walls are a combination of masonry infill and wood framing and the exterior is finished with stucco and metal paneling. In slab heating and cooling lines are connected to a hybrid closed loop geothermal and high-efficiency electrical boiler system. The geothermal loops are run through a nearby decommissioned sewage lagoon to takes advantage of its thermal properties. The two classroom wings have high windows in the hallways to allow maximum natural light into the space and passively collect solar heat energy, which is transferred to the incoming fresh air through the heat recovery ventilator in the mechanical room. Large roof overhangs limit solar heat gain in summer months.
